There is a difference between “Popular Plugins” and the best Plugins. There is big variety wordpress plugins for each category.So its always difficult to select Although every blogger here has his own opinion, In my opinion here is the list of the best and most necessary plugins for wordpress.

1.) Akismet
Majority of the wordpress bloggers use this plugin. This plugin detects and blocks spam comments automatically.

2.) All in one SEO Pack
A must plugin for wordpress, as it does perfect On Page Optimization for your blog.

3.) Google XML sitemaps
Sitemaps help search engines to crawl through your site better. Generating a sitemap helps google to crawl each and every page of your blog. The sitemap is generated automatically in one click.

4.) Share This
The best plugin for social bookmarking. Helps your readers to share, email and bookmark at social bookmarking sites.

5.) Custom Querry String (CSQ)
With the help of this plugin you acn adjust the number of posts to be displayed in each category, on the home page etc.

6.) LesterChan’s WP Polls
The polls you can see in my sidebar are created with this plugin. AJAX enabled plugin which helps you to create a poll with many options in it.

7.) Wordpress Enhanced Contact Form
I prefer this plugin because its very simple and light and doesnot show a credit line below the form. Majority of the top bloggers use it. You can see an example here.
